The Challenge: High-Frequency Hearing Decline

While youthful hearing sensitivity can extend up to 20,000 Hz, this upper threshold typically declines with age, especially among men over fifty or sixty. Many develop significant hearing impairment within the 4,000 to 10,000 Hz range—a condition known as presbycusis—which generally cannot be avoided. This presents a notable obstacle for aging birdwatchers, as the ability to identify and enjoy bird songs relies heavily on auditory cues.
